SWOP STATEMENT ON PUBLIC HEALTH AMENDMENT (REVIEW) BILL 2017

The Public Health Amendment (Review) Bill 2017, was introduced into the NSW Parliament yesterday.

The amendments to Section 79 of the Public Health Act differ to the proposed amendments in the
Final Report on the Statutory Review of the Public Health Act 2010. SWOP represented the sex worker community in that review and the Final Report was in line with our community’s views and recommendations.

SWOP is most concerned that Section 79 of the Public Health Act has not been repealed as we recommended. We are also strongly concerned re penalties that include six months imprisonment.

We want to assure our community that we will continue to work for the removal of Section 79.

SWOP believes good sexual health relies on the principle of mutual obligation. Sexual health is a shared responsibility, and is not the responsibility of one particular group in the community.
